Bishop Trevor Smith
Bishop Trevor Smith was born in Kingston, Jamaica and emigrated, with his family, to the United Kingdom, in 1995.
He was baptised at the age of fourteen and started pastoral work at the age of seventeen. He was ordained a bishop (previously, Ordained Minister) of the Church of God in 1989 and served the New Testament Church of God (NTCG), in Jamaica, in several capacities, including church development instructor, member of the national youth and Christian education board, member of the national public relations committee, and District Overseer, leading a district of nine churches, for nine years. He was the recipient of the NTCG’s honour for Pastor Of The Year, in 1990 and was also honoured by the Kiwanis Club for outstanding community service. Additionally, he worked as a schoolteacher, family counsellor and was chair of the boards of governors for several schools.
In Jamaica, he attended Providence Primary School, Saint Francis All Age School, Kingston College, College of Arts Science and Technology (CAST), Jamaica Theological Seminary, and the University of the West Indies. On his relocation to the UK, he studied at Birkbeck College – University of London, College of Law of England and Wales, Heythrop College – University of London and the University of Oxford.
He holds a Master of Art in philosophy and religion (with Merit), Bachelor of Art in theology and counselling, (with Hons.), Bachelor of Laws, (with Hons.), Post Graduate Certificate in the philosophy of science, (with Distinction), Diploma in Business Administration, (with Credit), Certificate in Education, (with Credit) and Diploma in Counselling Psychology, (with Distinction).
From the position of associate minister, at Brixton New Testament Church of God, he was appointed to the pastorate of Edmonton NTCG, a position he held for twenty-four years. In 2007, he received an award for outstanding achievement in church growth from the New Testament Church of God, in the UK.
He trained as a solicitor, in the United Kingdom, and sits as a Presiding Justice at Highbury Corner Magistrates Court, in London. Additionally, he was appointed chaplain to the mayor of the London Borough of Enfield. He has also served as member of Enfield’s Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education (SACRE), Vice President of Edmonton Council of Churches, Chair of Edmonton Ministers’ Fraternal, member of the Police Consultative Group and he represents the Free Church of England and Wales on the Churches Funeral Group. He led the North London team for the implementation of the McPherson Report on the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry, in the Borough of Enfield. He was also one of the ministers leading a delegation to Enfield council for a consultation into the provision of suitable venues for Christian worship, in the borough.
Bishop Smith is married to Diana (nee Brown) and their marriage has produced two children, Fiona and Sasha. They also have an adopted son, Luke. Mrs Diana Smith grew up in Battersea, London, and emigrated to Jamaica where she attended Saint Andrew High School for girls, Saint Joseph’s Teacher’s College and the University of the West Indies. She served as Vice Principal at Saint Andrew Preparatory School, in Kingston, Jamaica and in several capacities in the NTCG, including district president for the Women’s Ministries. Her work in education also includes her being Deputy Headteacher at Eldon Primary School, in Edmonton, London.
Bishop Smith is the District Bishop of the Wood Green district of New Testament Church of God and the pastor of the Wood Green NTCG. He believes that the Christian church’s mission is to make disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ, using the teachings and lifestyle of Jesus Christ, to inform a philosophy of ministry which is God-focussed, bible-based, people-centred, plural in leadership and sensitive and responsive to the needs of its community.
